About this map
The Amazon Basin is a free, non-commercial tool for studying the Amazon river system. It maps the
basin's roughly 745,000 river reaches from the HydroRIVERS network and reveals satellite imagery only
along their corridors, so the drainage pattern itself becomes the map. Every named river carries
measurements from the RiverATLAS database, and towns of 2,000 people or more can be examined alongside
them. It is intended for education and research; discharge, population and flooding figures are
modelled long-term averages rather than gauge readings, and river names follow national usage where
sources disagree.
